Gardeners Connect will be heading to the center of Missouri to spend the day seeing nurseries, buying plants and, best of all, seeing each other and getting caught up about everyone’s gardens.

The Plantaholic Frolic is a great opportunity to see what catches the eye of your fellow gardeners, share growing tips about the plants you find, and laughing as everyone scrambles for particular plants.

Visiting

  • Vintage Hill Farm Missouri

  • Wildflowers Nursery

  • Shirk’s Country Market and Greenhouse

  • Sutherlands Raytown

We plan to visit Vintage Hill Farm, a longtime favorite nursery of the plant obsessive. With over 1,700 varieties of annuals, tropicals, houseplants, perennials, roses, trees and shrubs and more. The problem won’t be finding something you just have to have but not filling the bus with your finds alone.

Vintage Hill specializes in not only the unusual but plants that will do well in our Midwest gardens. They grow most of their plants, so you now they are acclimatized to our zone and gardening needs.

We will be visiting Missouri Wildflowers Nursery, a first for the Plantaholic Frolic but most of us are familiar with purchasing their plants through mail order or local native plant sales. If it is a native plant for the garden, they most likely have it. Visiting the nursery, you will find a larger selection of well-grown specimens of wildflowers, grasses, aquatics, shrubs and trees for every growing condition and situation than you would see at a local sale.

The next stop will be Shirk’s Country Market and Greenhouse. It has a country market filled with things to eat and more plus a greenhouse filled with annuals, perennials and edibles. Chuck and Bri found this place last spring on a scouting trip for this year’s Frolic.

Our final destination will be back where the trip will start at Sutherland’s in Raytown, MO, to visit the garden center, where they will be stocked with everything for Mother’s Day the week after our trip. You will also find potting soil, fertilizer and most everything else you could need to get all of the plants you purchased on the trip off to a great start. Shop while the bus is being unloaded and organized.

Lunch will be at Shakespeare’s Pizza in Columbia, Mo. They are regionally known for their pizza, hospitality and humor. They have been around since 1973 and know what they are doing. We will have a serve-yourself house salad with a selection of dressing options, a selection of pizza with veggie and meat lover’s options with most everything in between. We are sure you will find a pizza option you will enjoy. Self-serve fountain drinks are included and, since none of you are driving, they also have a selection of beers and cocktails available for additional purchase.

The bus will load at 7:15 a.m. and depart at 7:30 a.m. sharp from Sutherland’s in Raytown, 6709 Blue Ridge Blvd, Raytown, MO 64133 (See Map Below). It is at the intersection of Blue Ridge Boulevard and 350 Highway, with easy access from I-435 and I-70. We plan to return at about 6 p.m.

The cost of the Plantaholic Frolic trip is $99 and includes all travel, tips, snacks, bottled water and lunch. You can also bring your own lidded beverages, like coffee.
