Visiting Gardeners Connect Supporters Vintage Hill Farms, Bloomers Greenhouse and Johnson Farms Plants and Pumpkins

For the 2019 Plantaholic Frolic we decided to showcase a few of our Gardeners Connect sponsors. They are all huge supporters of Gardeners Connect and support or mission and we are thrilled to be able to visit all of them in a single day. They also happen to be destination nurseries in their own right, owned by amazing people who we are very glad to call friends.

Something else new this year is that we will start and end our trip at one of the nurseries on the tour, Johnson Farms Plants and Pumpkins at 17701 Holmes Road, Belton, MO 64012.

The bus will begin loading by 6:45 a.m. with a 7 a.m. departure time. Please park in the part of the parking lot furthest from the greenhouse and closest to the road.

We anticipate returning to Johnson Farms Plants and Pumpkins at 4 p.m. giving you able time to shop before they close.

Our first stop will be the venerable Vintage Hill Farms. Yes it is the place we have been to before… where you found the… yes that place. Proprietor Jeff Oberhaus is well known for having the unique the unusual and even in mid-November the greenhouse was chock full of cool things. Things we had never seen before. Things we couldn’t recognize and things we simply must have. We will have all morning to shop for plants, containers and perhaps see some of the Highland cattle roaming the pastures.

Once we have loaded up all of the loot we will head back towards Kansas City stopping off at  Dempsey’s BBQ for a lunch buffet of brisket and pulled pork along with a selection of sides and drinks. We hope you are as impressed with the food as much as Chuck and Brian were. Brian is critical about the sides at BBQ places, if they don’t make the sides in house he isn’t impressed. He was very impressed by the sides as well as the BBQ.

Once back in Kansas City we will stop at Bloomers Greenhouse and hang with friend and plantswoman Lori Obermeyer. Her place is a showplace for plants. Lori knows how to grow perfect plants and every plant is always picture perfect, lush, full and ready for its closeup. We almost feel guilty taking them home where we won’t ever take as good of care of the as Lori. We said almost… but it never stops us from loading up flat after flat of plants.

Our third and final stop will be back at Johnson Farms Plants and Pumpkins. Owner Jeanne Johnson is always a wealth of information about all of the plants they carry and they carry a lot of plants. The huge greenhouse is filled with row after row of plant material and if you are a Proven Winners fan they probably have what you are looking for. Plants and Pumpkins are just the start of what they offer. They also have you pick vegetables, kids activities and a plethora of other options to delight throughout the year.
