Gardeners Connect has gone from coast to coast to check out the best gardens and specialty nurseries around over the past few years. This year is no exception. Plant geeks and garden shoppers alike will be awestruck by our upcoming trip to Hortlandia and Portland, OR.
Hortlandia, presented by the Hardy Plant Society of Oregon, is our signature event for this trip, and it is a gardeners paradise as it brings together 60 specialty and rare plant nurseries from across the Pacific Northwest under one giant roof. In addition, there is an area devoted to garden artisans creating one-of-a-kind works of art to complement your garden.
If that was not enough for you, we will also be taking a guided tour of the Lan Su Chinese Garden in downtown Portland, where we will learn the symbolism of the architecture and gardens and the story behind what makes the garden so special.
We will also be visiting the world renown, Portland Japanese Garden, a 5.5-acre complex of five gardens evoking a pre-modern Japanese estate. A private guided tour is included along with time to wander the garden on your own.
We will also be visiting the Pittock Mansion and gardens with a spectacular view looking out over downtown Portland to Mt. Hood in the distance.
A trip to Portland would not be complete without a visit to the Rogerson Clematis Collection, curated by Linda Beutler, longtime friend and presenter of our March 18 free speaker series program.
The tour will also include visits to several other local nurseries, including Joy Creek and Cistus nurseries to name a few.
The group will be staying four nights at the Marriott Hotel City Center in downtown Portland. Centrally located to hundreds of restaurants and tax-free shopping within walking distance of our hotel.
Dates for the trip are April 14-18 flying nonstop via Southwest Airlines. You are allowed two free checked bags and two carry-ons to get all of your treasures back to Kansas City. The outbound flight to Portland departs at 8:10 p.m. local time and arrives at 9:50 p.m. Portland time. It will be a late evening by the time we get to the hotel but ohh the excitement of going to Hortlandia the next morning! Our return flight on the 18th arrives in Kansas City at 4:30 p.m. local time.
The cost includes all airfare, ground transportation, scheduled events and hotel stay while on the trip. Meals and shopping are not included. There is also an optional trip price without airfare should you wish to make your own arrangements. Prices and registration will be available via GardenersConnect.org beginning Jan. 7.
We expect this trip to fill up quickly. You must be a member of Gardeners Connect to go on this trip. Membership is just $30 for a year.
