2019 Summer Road Trip – Iowa and Minnesota

The Waterfall and Conservatory at Des Moines Botanical Garden.

Friday, June 28-30, 2019
Visiting Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and Alan Branhagen, Des Moines Botanic Garden, Reiman Gardens, Como Park Conservatory.

Let’s all take a road trip this summer. Along the way we will have adventures, laughter and see four great public gardens over three fabulous days with amazing gardeners such as yourself.

The trip is planned for June 28-30, 2019. We plan to meet at the Kauffman Foundation, 4801 Rockhill Rd, Kansas City, MO 64110 with a 7 a.m. departure. We will be riding in style in 15 passenger, high top van. Driven by our president Dan Burkholder and executive director Brian Chadwick-Robinson. We advise you to be dropped off or use a ride share service to and from the Kauffman Foundation.

Our first stop will be at the Des Moines Botanical Garden with its 150 foot wide geodesic-domed conservatory that reaches 80 feet high enclosing over 1,000 taxa of plants from wet and dry tropical regions the world round. Outside you will find a water garden, borders, views of the Des Moines river and a hillside garden with a unique waterfall. You can have lunch at Trellis Cafe located in the gardens or at other nearby restaurants including Zombie Burger.

We will then head even further north to check into our hotel for two nights stay in Eden Prairie, MN. We will offer dual and single occupancy options for your stay. WIFI and breakfast Saturday and Sunday morning are included.

Saturday morning we will take in Como Park Conservatory in St Paul, MN. This is more than just a conservatory. You will find a fern house, sunken garden, orchid house and other indoor gardens but outdoors you will discover water gardens, a Minnesota natives garden and a bonsai collection among other gardens.

We will have a lunch stop and then head to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum where our own Alan Branhagen took root after leaving Kansas City. You will have time to visit the many gardens including rock, annual, perennial, hosta, wildflower, home demo gardens and more. They even have a lily garden where hopefully there will be a few lilies in bloom. We also plan to drive the 3 mile drive through the arboretum with select stops along the way.

Sunday morning we will depart the hotel after breakfast and head back to Kansas City with a stop in Ames, IA for lunch and after a visit to Reiman Gardens. Here you will find the new water-wise hillside garden and the Buck rose garden showcasing the Iowa State rose breeding program among the many other gardens to wander. You can also step inside the Butterfly Wing and immerse yourselves in the fanciful flights of the butterflies there.

From Reiman we plan to arrive back in Kansas City on Sunday evening at approximately 6:30 p.m.

The cost for this trip is $595 per person for single occupancy and $485 per person for dual occupancy. The trip cost includes all ground transportation during the trip, 2 nights hotel stay/breakfast, and admission to all gardens.

Registration deadline is Monday, June 3rd or until the trip is sold out. If there is demand we will open up a second van.
